Trunk or Treat!

This year, since Halloween fell on a Sunday, we celebrated at our church with 5 wards and about 1000 people (or so it seemed). The kids had a lot of fun, I tried to avoid the crowds which meant I handed out the candy from our trunk, and Dave had the privilege of taking Hannah around and hearing her say “trunk or treat!” I was sad to miss out on trick-or-treating this year with the kids–something I love to do (maybe it has something to do with “sharing” their candy). Every time I look at their candy and feel my mouth water, I remind myself it’s a good thing I’m on the “no-candy” deal this year. I don’t need that extra weight right now.

A note about our costumes this year…since I am home-bound due to my broken right leg, I did my costume shopping online this year. Lucky for me, Hannah and Lucy picked their costumes out of our costume box upstairs (never-mind that Hannah’s Cinderella dress is made for a 6-8 year old). Madison dressed as Hermione Granger, due to her recent obsession with the Harry Potter books. Caleb “planned” that he and Dave were going to be costume “buddies” as Mario and Luigi. A few days before Halloween, I reminded Dave of Caleb’s plans, gave him a list of what he needs to buy to resemble Mario, and asked him if he’s really going to go through with it. His wise reply was “how many more times am I going to be asked by my son to be costume buddies?” Next thing I know, he comes home from Target with the deluxe adult-size Mario costume. Ya gotta respect that. Especially since Halloween is Dave’s favorite (wink, wink) holiday.

Halloween

This year’s Halloween was a little anti-climactic.  Most of us were sick.  So Grandma Sedgwick took the three older kids to our ward trunk-or-treat that afternoon while we stayed home and geared up for the evening’s trick-or-treating.  I (Jessica) took the girls out that night, while Caleb opted to stay home with Dad and hand out candy.  Watching Hannah beg for treats (and when one was placed in her hand, she held out her other hand for more) was the highlight of my month.  The neighbors were probably wondering why I was letting my baby even get a hold of all that candy, but how can I deny her something that brings her (and me) such joy?

It was tons of fun, even if I did feel sick with flu-like symptoms.  I definitely paid for it when I woke up this morning (and for the rest of the day).  But it was worth it…especially seeing the reaction of my girls when a man posing as a statue holding an ax slowly stepped in front of Madison as she was eagerly waiting for the door to open in the dark.  Super scary!  She was very brave and didn’t even scream!
